Nothing epitomizes the “Go Fast & Live Large” ’80s quite like a Porsche 930 Turbo Coupe fitted with the factory’s Slope Nose option. Magnus Walker is passionate and serious about early Porsches. He has just completed an extensive restoration of a ‘66 911. His goal was to build a lightweight R inspired sports purpose SWB car – the type of car that was raced by the Porsche factory in the mid 60’s (think early Vic Elford). The current weight of the car is 2065 lbs with half a tank of gas; it has been lowered to 23.5” rear -24” front, corner balanced, & aligned. Last week we posted a ‘74 911 with a 2.7 RS style engine and setup nicely in a street/track configuration. That car sold pretty quickly afterwards…

So, here we are again with another street/track setup. An ‘81 911 SC Coupe. This one is from Mohr Imports of Monterey, California. They have an asking price of $14,900. That’s chump change when it comes to getting into a street/track-prepped Porsche 911. Since we haven’t seen this car in the metal, we’re guessing it’ll require additional attention before being considered truly track ready…One can easily spend again the asking price getting this car properly setup and still be light years ahead of the game. There is absolutely no way one can build a street/track 911 from scratch for this small amount of money. That said, this car looks like a great starting point for some serious fun on the track.

“The Porsche 993 is the company’s internal name for the version of the Porsche 911 model manufactured and sold between late 1993 and early 1998, replacing the 964. Its discontinuation marked the end of air-cooled Porsches.

One of the changes in the 993 over preceding 911s is the implementation of an all-alloy multi-arm rear suspension attached to an all-alloy subframe. It required the aforementioned widening of the rear wheel arches, which itself helped the 993’s stability. This suspension improved the 993’s cornering abilities, making it more direct and more stable and helping to reduce the tendency to oversteer if throttle was lifted during hard cornering, a trait of earlier 911s. It also reduced interior noise and improved ride quality.”

“The 993 was the first 911 to have a standard six-speed manual transmission; previous cars, except for the Porsche 959, had 4- or 5-speed gearboxes. In virtually every situation, it was possible to keep the engine in its best torque range above 4500 rpm.”

“The 993’s optional all wheel drive system was refined over that of the 964. Porsche departed from the 964’s setup consisting of three differentials and revised the system based on the layout from its 959 supercar, replacing the centre differential with a viscous coupling unit. In conjunction with the 993’s redesigned and recalibrated suspension, this system improved handling characteristics and still retained the stability offered by AWD without having to suffer compromises in understeer. Its simpler layout also reduced the system’s weight.”
