AMELIA ISLAND, Florida (March 10, 2011) – Calling all Steve McQueen fans! RM Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction house, will lift the gavel on the fabulous, Slate Grey 1970 Porsche 911S formerly owned by the “King of Cool” Steve McQueen. This very car was featured in his epic Hollywood film “Le Mans”. This highly-anticipated sale takes place in Monterey, California, August 18 – 20, 2011.

Built to the highest 1970 specification, complete with air conditioning and a full complement of factory options, the Slate Grey 911S stars in the film’s legendary opening sequence as McQueen’s character, hotshot Porsche driver, Michael Delaney, drives through the French countryside, reflecting on life, death, and racing.

In addition to its starring role in the film, the Porsche 911S was used as McQueen’s personal transport during the movie’s production, later joining his own stable of extraordinary motor cars in California – a collection that over the years included everything from a Jaguar XK-SS, multiple Ferraris, Porsches, airplanes, motorcycles and everything in between.

Today, the 911S is presented in exceptionally original condition, and is offered from the collection of one of America’s foremost Porsche aficionados. In advance of its auction in August, it will be displayed at this weekend’s world-renowned Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and RM Amelia Island sale, March 10 – 13 in Northeast Florida.

Editors’ Note: Here at PML we had the pleasure of viewing this car at a charity event known as “The Friends Of Steve McQueen Car Show“.  This is an annual fund raiser for the Boys Republic of Chino Hills, California (of which McQueen was an alumnus).  It’s a beautiful car, and everything they say it is.  Please note however that the passenger side windshield wiper is improperly positioned – we’re going to assume it’s just loose.  On 911s, both wipers should lay flat in front of the driver when at rest.  Prospective bidders should not worry about this – it’s a real simple, 5 minute adjustment with hand tools.  In fact, we’re surprised this got past everybody during the photo shoot!

And yes, we intend to be at this sale – watching this piece of modern cultural history go across the block…see you there!

Scottsdale, Arizona - Friday, 21 January:

This beautiful Porsche 904 GTS hammered at slightly more than $1 million dollars at the Gooding Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. This sale marks a record (of sorts) for Gooding; it is the highest sale recorded for a Porsche 904 to date. This 904 – #017 – is well known to us here at PML.  It’s the former Don Wester car with a great provenance, race history, and continues to be campaigned extensively on the vintage circuit.

The Porsche 904 is a neat car. They were very light, agile, and powered by the Fuhrmann 4 cam engine. It marks Porsches’ 1st foray into producing fiberglass-bodied race cars. The 904 debuted late in 1963, for the 1964 racing season, as a successor to the 718, which had been introduced in 1957. It was the first Porsche to use a fibreglass body, appearing more like specialist racing cars than the modified sports cars typical at the time. It was also the first Porsche to use a ladder chassis. Here’s to hoping the new owner continues to race, show, and enjoy it as much as the previous owners.

Corvette Racing pilot Johnny O’Connell auctions off a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity: A genuine Joerg Bergmeister “Ass Whoopin” for charity.  As comical as this auction is, it underscores what great sportsmanship, respect, and camaraderie exists between the Flying Lizard Porsche and Corvette Racing camps in the ALMS Series.  All for a good cause.

This video really isn’t meant to be part of PML’s “regular” auction coverage. Nonetheless, we hope you’ll smile, and enjoy the show.

Monterey Peninsula — The auctions were busy this year. Total sales reached the $172M mark, easily surpassing the $120M – $140M pre-auction estimates. Some observers feel that “the money is back”. Here at PML we think it’s more of a situation where money is simply being shifted around in order to preserve it – and not so much a matter of; “well, I had a good year, let’s go buy a car…”. One function of Real Wealth is asset management – the capability of moving those assets from one investment class to another. All this lateral movement bodes very well for collector cars, as car enthusiast investors scramble to get out of more volatile, toxic investment sectors – such as commercial real estate.

This is not to imply the Monterey auctions were the exclusive domain of the “Big Players”. Yes, there was certainly lots of high end action, but there were also plenty of buys – and great deals – at just about every price point imaginable.  Something for every one. A quick look at the Porsche results below will show some “well sold” Porsches, along with some examples we would consider “well bought”.

“Monterey Week” is almost upon us. What better place to be in mid-August than on the Monterey Peninsula? PML will be hitting the Monterey auction circuit in full force this year. Russo & Steele, RM Auctions, Gooding, and Bonhams all have Porsches consigned, so the action ought to be fast and furious all weekend long. At Bonhams, the action starts Thursday, August 12^th. You will find the schedule here.

We present here a few of the listings from the Bonhams event to be held out at The Quail. They have a magnificent selection of Porsches this year. Headlining the Porsche contingent is the fabulous Amalfitano Collection. The late Michael Amalfitano was very passionate about Porsches and racing – a quick look through The Collection offered here will underscore that passion.

The Collection consists of several high-end Porsche race cars; a 910, a 917, a 962, a 3.0 liter RSR, and a vintage-race prepared 2.0 liter 911. The Amalfitano race cars are joined by the Amalfitano street cars: An ’08 GT2, a 964 C4S Lightweight (one of 20 built), a 356C coupe, and a great tractor.
