Stuttgart. In its session today, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave the green light for series development of the Porsche 918 Spyder. Reflecting the overwhelming response from the public and customers to the Concept Study, the Supervisory Board gave Porsche’s Board of Management the mission to develop a production model based on the car already presented. This concept version of an ultra-high-performance mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing, hitting the headlines worldwide.

Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG: “Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base.”

The Concept Study of the 918 Spyder allows CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km, corresponding to fuel consumption of 3.0 litre/100 km (94.1 mpg imp) in the NEDC, on the one hand, and the performance of a super-sports car, on the other. This extremely efficient drivetrain technology then forms a symbiosis in the 918 Spyder with truly outstanding design and high-tech motorsport achievements. Further product details of the 918 Spyder will be disclosed in the months to come.

“Be the 1st on your block…”

What better place to be in mid-August than on the Monterey Peninsula? PML will be hitting the Monterey auction circuit in full force this year. Russo & Steele, RM, Gooding, and Bonhams all have Porsches consigned, so the action ought to be fast and furious all weekend long. At Russo & Steele, the action starts Thursday, August 12th (click here for the schedule).

We present here a few of the listings from Russo & Steele. They have a fairly broad selection ranging from 356s, to SWB and LWB “Longhood” 911s, a track-only 911, a US-spec Carrera, an unusual “delete spoiler” M491 Cabriolet, a 930 Turbo Coupe, and a 996 Twin Turbo Coupe**. Pre-auction estimates were not available at press time. (Please note: this is not a complete listing;cars are still being added to the auction line-up). For any car guy with 120 octane in their veins, this is truly a “pilgrimage to Mecca”… We hope to see you up there. Please click here for the auction location – a downloadable pdf map is available.

Scroll down the page to view the offerings – for further information on any of the cars, simply click on it’s image. (When clicking on the links; be sure to hit your browser’s “back” button to return to this page afterwards).

**PML has not inspected any of these cars, nor do we have any vested interest in their sale.

Porsche Wins Again and Breaks Another Record. This time at the Pikes Peak Time Attack Class With a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and Breaking the Record by 38 Seconds — Ahead of Every Production-based Car Entered. Jeff Zwart, from Woody Creek, Colorado, driving the specially-prepared Luminox Watch Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car, has won and set a new record in the 2WD Time Attack class in Sunday’s 88th running of the Pikes Peak Hillclimb.

Zwart, now a seven-time Pikes Peak class winner, not only broke the 2009 class record by 38 seconds, but went faster than all but five of the entire field — three Unlimited Class and two Open Wheels cars, all with 600-plus horsepower. His 911 GT3 Cup car also beat all the production based race car entries.

Stuttgart. The Motorsport Newsletter regularly provides information on Porsche Motorsport around the world.

Le Mans 24 Hours: 911 GT3 RSR wins GT2, overall victory for works drivers

Works drivers Marc Lieb, Richard Lietz and Wolf Henzler won the Le Mans 24 Hour GT2 class (12/13 June) in their Felbermayr-Proton 911 GT3 RSR. In front of 240,000 spectators, the trio set a cracking pace and brought the 450 hp Porsche home to victory without any technical mishaps. With seven manufacturers and 18 race cars in the excellently supported GT2 field, no other vehicle spent less time in the pits. Porsche also celebrated the overall victory of Porsche works drivers Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas, who shared the cockpit of an Audi R15 TDI with former Porsche factory pilot Mike Rockenfeller. Timo Bernhard is the first racing driver ever to win the four long-distance classics, thus bringing home a genuine Motorsport Grand Slam: In 2003 he won the Daytona 24 Hours, from 2006 to 2009 he claimed four victories at the Nürburgring 24 hour race, he won the 2008 12 Hours of Sebring and now at Le Mans in an Audi. Bernhard has competed as a Porsche works driver since 2002.

Marcel Tiemann: Making good recovery

Marcel Tiemann’s recovery (36) is making good progress. On 17 June the race driver was moved from the university hospital Grosshardern to the rehabilitation clinic Bad Aibling (Bavaria) where his treatment is continuing according to plan. On 23 May, at the Imola round of the International GT Open, Tiemann’s Audi was shunted from the track by a competitor and crashed into a wall. Tiemann sustained serious craniocerebral injuries, a broken cervical vertebra and broken ribs. Marcel Tiemann scored four of his five overall wins at the Nürburgring 24 hour race in a Porsche 911 fielded by Manthey Racing.

ADAC GT Masters:

Mühlner Motorsport takes points lead with 100th win

After the fifth round of the ADAC GT Masters on the Hockenheimring (29 May), the Mühlner Motorsport team celebrated their 100th win. Joerg and Tim Bergmeister gunned to the finish in their 911 GT3 R 0.8 seconds ahead of a Lamborghini. The Bergmeister brothers clinched third place at race two (30 May), putting Mühlner Motorsport back in the points’ lead and Tim second in the drivers’ standings.

British GT Championship: Two podium places for Trackspeed Porsche

Richard Westbrook and David Ashburn saw the chequered flag at race five of the British GT Championship in Spa-Francorchamps (5 June) in second at the wheel of their Trackspeed 911 GT3 R, followed closely by their team colleagues Oliver Bryant and Oliver Morley. Westbrook led until handing the car to Ashburn 15 laps before the end of the 150 minute race. Ashburn currently ranks third in the drivers’ classification.

Belcar Long Distance Championship: Goossens and Soulet claim second win

It was in the first lap at round two in Spa-Francorchamps (5 June) that Marc Goossens and Maxime Soulet snatched the lead with their Prospeed Competition 911 GT3 R. After 150 minutes, the pair celebrated their second victory of the season. Over many laps, Ruben Maes and Enzo Ide were running second in the sister Prospeed Porsche, but relinquished their position to an Audi to see the flag in third.

Italian GT Championship: Gianluca Roda remains in the lead

Gianluca Roda is still the man to beat in the GT3 class after races five and six of the Italian GT Championship in Magione (6 June). Roda crossed the finish line at race five in second place with teammate Raffaele Giammaria in the Autorlando Sport 911 GT3 R, but was later announced as winner because the original victor had overtaken under yellow. In the second 48-minute race on Sunday, Roda and Giammaria claimed third overall and again won the GT3 class.

Nürburgring Long Distance Championship:

Photo finish win for Porsche

After 27 laps or 660 kilometres, victory was decided on the final metres at race four of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship (12 June). In torrential rain, Chris Mamerow in his Mamerow Racing 911 GT3 R caught Hans-Joachim Stuck’s Audi shortly before the flag to win by just 0.24 seconds. Mamerow shared the cockpit of the Porsche with Marc Basseng.

Grand-Am:

Andy Lally remains in title race after second win of season

In their Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Andy Lally and Spencer Pumpelly won the GT class of the six hour race in Watkins Glen (5 June). Driving for TRG, the pair received support from former motorbike racer Bob Doyle. After six championship rounds and two wins so far this season, Andy Lally ranks a close third in the drivers’ standings.

Carrera Cup Asia: Double win for Marchy Lee in Zhuhai – Menzel still leads

After four straight wins for reigning champion Christian Menzel, Marchy Lee (Red Bull Racing) from Hong Kong dominated at races five and six in Zhuhai (20 June). Germany’s Menzel still leads the championship ahead of Craig Baird.

Carrera Cup Deutschland:

Nicolas Armindo secures flag-to-flag win

With a flag-to-flag victory from pole position at round three of the Carrera Cup Deutschland on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz (6 June), Nicolas Armindo from France (Hermes Attempto Racing) put an end to Nick Tandy’s winning streak. Briton Tandy won the first two rounds of the series, and with second at the EuroSpeedway still leads the drivers’ classification.

Matmut Carrera Cup France: Sylvain Noël wins tyre poker in Le Mans

Porsche France invited drivers from all over Europe to contest round seven of the Carrera Cup France run as support to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sylvain Noël from France turned heads with his performance with slicks on a damp track when he snatched the lead from Briton Tim Harvey – racing with rain tyres – shortly before the flag. Noël won, his compatriot Kevin Estre also got past Harvey to claim second, leaving the Briton with the third podium spot as the best non-French contender.

Carrera Cup Great Britain:

Tim Harvey’s top form continues

Old-hand Tim Harvey seems to be unbeatable at home. The 48-year-old champion of 2008 won the seventh race in Oulton Park near Chester (6 June) in his 911 GT3 Cup run by Red Line Racing, with his arch rival Michael Caine retiring after an accident in the first corner. Again at race eight, Caine found no way past Harvey, who went on to claim his seventh victory this season.

Carrera Cup Japan:

Yasuhiro Shimizu inches ahead

With his wins from pole position at races four and five in Fuji (12/13 June), the reigning champion and points’ leader Yasuhiro Shimizu extended his lead slightly to now sit six points ahead of Hideto Yasuoka. His young rival, who receives support from Porsche as a motorsport talent, remains within striking distance after securing two second places. Shimizu has four wins to his credit, Yasuoka one.

Carrera Cup Scandinavia:

Robin Rudholm leads after thriller in Gothenburg

At race nine on the city circuit in the harbour of Gothenburg, Fredrik Larsson snatched back the lead from Robin Rudholm after winning the hefty duel over the entire race distance. Rudholm saw the flag in second, 0.3 seconds behind the winner. At race ten (both races 5 June), however, Rudholm returned to top the tables after Larsson pulled out before the start with a broken drive shaft.

Stuttgart. On 14 June 1970, Porsche claimed the first of what would become 16 overall victories in the world’s most prestigious endurance race, the Le Mans 24 Hours. After precisely 4,607.811 kilometres – or 343 laps – Hans Herrmann and Richard Atwood were first across the finishing line in the legendary Porsche 917 KH from Porsche Salzburg, which bore the starting number 23. Gerard Larrousse and Willy Kauhsen in the Martini Porsche 917 LH, followed by Rudi Lins and Helmut Marko in the Porsche 908/02 took second and third places respectively, making it a total triumph for Porsche.

However, the road to this victory was by no means an easy one for Porsche. The Zuffenhausen sports car manufacturer had been racing at the Sarthe circuit since 1951, achieving numerous class wins thanks to intrinsic Porsche qualities such as lightweight construction, aerodynamics and reliability. In 1969, Porsche was pipped to the post in the closest ever Le Mans race, with Herrmann and Larrousse in the Porsche 908 finishing just 75 metres – around one second – behind the Ford GT 40 of Jacky Ickx.

In the anniversary year of 1970, all the signs pointed towards an offensive that would finally see the much longed-for overall victory in Le Mans go to Stuttgart. The Porsche 917 was destined for victory, having made its debut just a year earlier. On 21 April 1969, the 25 Porsche 917s were approved by the homologation commission in Zuffenhausen. The cost of materials alone exceeded DM 5 million. The Porsche 917, developed by Ferdinand Piëch, was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. This new ‘ultimate’ Porsche quickly caused a stir among rival competitors. Weighing in at close to the minimum weight of 800 kilograms, it went on to become one of the fastest and most successful racing cars of all time. The lightweight 12-cylinder engine delivered up to 580 hp at 8,400 rpm with a displacement of 4.5 litres. This enabled the long-tail version to reach speeds approaching 400 km/h (248 mph) on the 5,823 metre-long Hunaudières straight at Le Mans.

In the run-up to the 1970 race, it was clear that the lessons learned from previous years had been worthwhile. Realising that rash manoeuvres in the first few hours of this classic endurance race would ultimately end in failure, Porsche made the experienced Hans Herrmann its first choice as driver. The Sindelfingen veteran combined speed and good sense. Together with Englishman Richard Attwood, he started in the 4.5-litre short-tail version bearing the number 23, which was painted in the red and white colours of Porsche Salzburg. The team’s second car, featuring a 4.9-litre engine and long-tail body, was driven by Vic Elford and Kurt Ahrens. A further three Porsche 917s were entered by John Wyer along with the psychedelic-coloured 4.5-litre long-tail version of the Martini team. There was also an entire armada of 907, 908, 910, 911 S and 914/6 models. At precisely 4 p.m. on 13 June, 24 Porsche cars stood at the starting line in Le Mans. By the next day there were still 12 remaining, five of which were classified. The only other cars to be classified were two Ferrari 512 S – this was out of a total field of 51 starters.

This race went down in history – and not just from the perspective of Porsche – because of the disastrous weather. Vic Elford recalled how it was sometimes impossible to overtake, even on the long straights. Kurt Ahrens described it as being like sitting in a boat. And just a few weeks after his victory, Hans Herrmann admitted that driving in the rain had prompted him to make the decision to finally hang up his helmet no matter what the outcome. When leaving his house in Sindelfingen-Maichingen, his wife had asked him when he was going to give up driving, to which he responded: “When I win.”
A promise is a promise. An hour after the start, which saw the drivers begin the race sitting in their cars instead of performing the world-famous “Le Mans start”, Herrmann was only in ninth place. The race leader was Jo Siffert, also in a Porsche 917, followed by Jacky Ickx in a Ferrari 512 S. Siffert later missed a shift and blew his engine, while Ickx crashed his red racer at the chicane. At around 6:15 p.m. came the almost unbelievable news that four Ferrari 512 S had crashed into one another in the driving rain and were out of the race. The race also took its toll on the Porsche armada, with all three 917s of the Gulf team gradually dropping out.

Now was the moment for the experienced veteran Herrmann, who had the perfect partner in Richard Attwood, to show what he could do. Under the most difficult weather conditions, he gradually moved his way up the field, guiding the Porsche Salzburg 917 confidently to the first ever overall victory for Porsche at Le Mans. He realised the significance of this moment as the race came to an end on 14 June 1970: “Wow! That may have been your last lap ever as a racing driver.” Back home in Stuttgart, his victory was celebrated with a parade, in which he drove his winning car through the city to the market square. Thousands of people turned out to congratulate Hans Herrmann, ex-racing driver.

Porsche followed up this success with a further 15 overall victories at Le Mans, the second coming just a year later in 1971. In a unique Porsche 917 with a lightweight magnesium chassis, Gijs van Lennep and Dr. Helmut Marko drove to victory on a still largely chicane-free circuit. In doing so, they set an incredible record, which has never been broken. The Porsche 917 completed precisely 5,335.313 kilometres and 397 laps in 24 hours, clocking up an average speed of 222.304 km/h (138.140 mph) despite all of the pit stops and the long night. The fastest lap in the race was achieved by Jackie Oliver’s Gulf 917, with an unbelievable 244 km/h (151.6 mph) average speed, while the 917 long-tail Coupé of Elford/Larrousse was clocked at a maximum speed of 386 km/h (239.8 mph) on Hunaudières in 1971.

In 1976 and 1977 the Porsche 936 was victorious, while in 1981 it won again under Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell with a new turbo engine. Belgian driver Ickx won at Le Mans six times, four of them in a Porsche. In 1982 he was yet again part of the winning team in a triple victory that represented the first milestone for the most successful racing car of all time, the Porsche 956. Up to 1994, different variants of the 956/962 won at Le Mans seven times. 148 of these were produced in Weissach.

In some years, Porsche conceded the most important race of the year to customer teams, who emerged as frequent winners. Klaus Ludwig and the Whittington brothers thus achieved victory in Le Mans in 1979 with a Porsche 935 for the Cologne-based Kremer team, while Reinhold Joest guided the Porsche brand to well-deserved overall victories in 1984, 1985 and 1997.

Faced with the strongest ever field to line up at Le Mans in June 1998, Porsche racing director Herbert Ampferer spoke at the time of the “race of the century”. Porsche was represented with two new 911 GT1s and achieved a stunning double victory for the factory in the world’s most important endurance race, in front of a crowd of 250,000 thrilled spectators. This was the 16th and most recent overall victory for Porsche at the Sarthe circuit.

From 10 to 11 July 2010, Porsche will be celebrating this special motor sports anniversary in suitable style by taking part in the “Le Mans Classic”, an event which is only held every two years. In six classes covering model years 1923 to 1979, around 400 historic racing cars will gather to relive their old racing triumphs once more. Among them will be some of the overall winners from the Porsche Museum, which will lead an anniversary parade on the race track. Many famous drivers including Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood will also be taking part and will be available for autograph sessions.

Nürburgring 24 Hours: Porsche swift but no happy ending

For eight hours, the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid led the Nürburgring 24 hour race, until almost two hours before the flag when engine damage halted the spectacular charge of the ‘rolling race lab’ fielded by Manthey Racing. Up until that point, the innovative hybrid-911 impressively demonstrated its efficiency. On one tank of fuel it turned, more often than not, one to two laps more than its rivals. Manthey Racing’s 911 GT3 R was punted out of the lead by a competitor seven and a half hours after the start. Huge success for the standard 911 GT3 RS: claiming 13th overall it exceeded all expectations. Manthey Racing had amassed four straight overall wins with Porsche from 2006 to 2009.

American Le Mans Series: Victory and points’ lead for Porsche pilots

A gripping finale at race three of the ALMS in Laguna Seca (22 May): Just before the finish, Patrick Long overtook the leading BMW at the restart after the last full course yellow in his Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSR to win by just 0.3 seconds after six hours. Long shared the cockpit with Joerg Bergmeister. With two victories this season, the works drivers are now the sole points’ leaders. In the Le Mans Prototypes (LMP), Klaus Graf, Sascha Maassen and Memo Gidley finished second overall in the Muscle Milk Cytosport RS Spyder.

Le Mans Series: Lieb and Lietz masterfully pocket victory number two

Cool, calm and brilliant: Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz demonstrated their craft at the second round of the Le Mans Series in Spa (9 May). Several rivals skidded off the track in rain. An almost one-hour power cut resulted in the interruption of the race, rendering strategies ineffective. Unperturbed, the two works drivers brought home their second victory of the season in the Felbermayr-Proton 911 GT3 RSR.

FIA GT3 European Championship: Win and podium for Bergmeister and Cunill

The FIA GT3 European Championship kicked off the new season with a thriller in Silverstone (2 May): After a wild three-way fight, Tim Bergmeister snatched the lead in the penultimate lap at the wheel of Trackspeed Racing’s 911 GT3 R and went on the win with Supercup pilot Siso Cunill. The duo clinched third at race two. At the rain-sodden second FIA GT3 weekend in Brno (22/23 May), the fastest Porsche was the 911 GT3 R of Pro Speed Competition, driven by Marco Holzer and Paul van Splunteren. The pair finished race four in sixth.

International GT Open: Two Porsche teams in top three at halfway mark

After six of twelve races, Richard Lietz and Gianluca Roda rank second with their 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Autorlando Sport. Recently at race five in Imola (22 May), the Austrian and the Italian climbed the podium in position three. Their Porsche colleagues Patrick Pilet and Raymond Narac rank a close third in the points. The greatest success for the two Frenchmen at the wheel of their IMSA Performance Matmut 911 GT3 RSR this season was a victory at race three on the Nürburgring (1 May).

Championnat de France FFSA GT: Larbre Compétition celebrates first win

An excellent weekend for the long-established Larbre Compétition squad: After securing second at the fifth race of the French GT Championship (8 May) in Dijon, the next day Patrick Bornhauser and Laurent Groppi snatched their first win of the season at race six. The Porsche pair currently ranks second in the drivers’ classification.

Campionato Italiano Gran Turismo: Gianluca Roda tops the points

With two fourth places at the second race weekend of the Italian GT Championship (9 May), local matador Gianluca Roda defended his lead in the GT3 drivers’ classification. Roda shared the cockpit of his Autorlando Sport 911 GT3 R with Wolf Henzler.

Porsche Mobil1 Supercup: Siedler wins in Barcelona, Rast dominates Monaco

With a flag-to-flag victory from pole position on the legendary GP circuit of Monaco (16 May), René Rast wrested the points’ lead from Dutchman Jeroen Bleekemolen at round four with his Al Faisal Lechner Racing-Porsche. A week previously, Austria’s Norbert Siedler had celebrated his first win in this brand trophy series on the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona.

Carrera Cup Asia: Christian Menzel triumphs in Beijing

Christian Menzel remains unbeaten in the 2010 Carrera Cup Asia. The German won races three and four in his StarChase 911 GT3 Cup on the Goldenport International Circuit in Beijing (22/23 May).

Carrera Cup Deutschland: Nick Tandy continues winning streak

Nick Tandy is the man to beat in the Carrera Cup Deutschland. Nicolas Armindo was able to maintain the Briton’s pace in the early stage of the second race on the Circuit Ricardo Tormo near Valencia (23 May), until deteriorating tyres forced the Frenchman to reduce speed. Tandy won by more than eleven seconds. Robert Lukas (22 years) finished third after starting from ninth and was the first Pole in the history of the Carrera Cup Deutschland to climb the winner’s podium.

Matmut Carrera Cup France: Frédérick Makowiecki rules Spa

Everything ran perfectly for Frédérick Makowiecki (Luxury Racing) at the third race weekend of the Matmut Carrera Cup France in Belgium’s Spa (8/9 May), with two pole positions, two fastest race laps and two wins planting him at the top of the points. Kevin Estre finished in second place twice. Estre is Makowiecki’s toughest rival in the fight for the title and currently heads the junior classification.

Carrera Cup Great Britain: Michael Caine halts Tim Harvey’s string of wins

In torrential rain at Brands Hatch, Michael Caine (Motorbase Performance) relegated reigning champion Tim Harvey to finish in position two with a ten second gap at race five of the Carrera Cup Great Britain (2 May). At race six held on the same day, Tim Harvey (Red Line Racing) notched up his fifth win of the season on a drying track ahead of Caine.

Carrera Cup Japan: Maiden victory for rookie Yasuoka

At race three of the Carrera Cup Japan in Fuji (2 May), reigning champion Y. Shimizu and newcomer H. Yasuoka continued their duel at the top. Although Shimizu took up the race from pole position, it was Yasuoka in his Garmin-911 GT3 Cup who claimed his maiden victory. Two points separate Shimizu at the top of the drivers’ standings from Yasuoka in second.

Carrera Cup Scandinavia: Four races, four different victors

Action-packed thrills in the Carrera Cup Scandinavia. With eight races already contested, Robin Rudholm (Xlander Racing) leads the standings one point ahead of Fredrik Larsson. Four drivers won at the last four races. Edward Sandström and Rudholm were victorious in southern Sweden’s Knutstorp (8/9 May). Reigning champion Jocke Mangs dominated in rain at Karlskoga (21 May), with Fredrik Larsson winning one day later.

That said, this was such a tight piece of driving by Simon Pagenaud in the Patron – Highcroft racing Acura, during the recent ALMS event at Laguna Seca. He worked his way up from last to 1st in only 4 laps. Very nice, smooth work by Pagenaud, we felt compelled to share it here, we especially enjoy the extreme, “down low” camera angle. Enjoy…
