What better place to be in mid-August than on the Monterey Peninsula? PML will be hitting the Monterey auction circuit in full force this year. Russo & Steele, RM, Gooding, and Bonhams all have Porsches consigned, so the action ought to be fast and furious all weekend long. At Russo & Steele, the action starts Thursday, August 12th (click here for the schedule).

We present here a few of the listings from Russo & Steele. They have a fairly broad selection ranging from 356s, to SWB and LWB “Longhood” 911s, a track-only 911, a US-spec Carrera, an unusual “delete spoiler” M491 Cabriolet, a 930 Turbo Coupe, and a 996 Twin Turbo Coupe**. Pre-auction estimates were not available at press time. (Please note: this is not a complete listing;cars are still being added to the auction line-up). For any car guy with 120 octane in their veins, this is truly a “pilgrimage to Mecca”… We hope to see you up there. Please click here for the auction location – a downloadable pdf map is available.

Scroll down the page to view the offerings – for further information on any of the cars, simply click on it’s image. (When clicking on the links; be sure to hit your browser’s “back” button to return to this page afterwards).

**PML has not inspected any of these cars, nor do we have any vested interest in their sale.

There were hundreds, if not thousands, of aftermarket Slope Nose “conversions” done to Turbo and non-Turbo 911s alike. The quality of these aftermarket conversions ranged from being almost indistinguishable from the real deal to simply horrendous hack jobs. Here at PML we’ve seen a lot of these so-called conversions fall in the latter category. That said, whenever a real one comes on the market it will get our attention – every time.

John Witmer of AIC Auto in Pennsylvania presents this outstanding ‘87 930 Turbo. Finished in the classic Silver over Black leather combination, this example is well maintained and well preserved with only 44k miles on the odometer. It is nicely equipped with full leather Sports Seats, the original Blaupunkt Reno radio, Rear wiper, Ltd slip, 16″ Fuchs Alloys, and a sunroof. A big plus are the sport seats; not all of the Slope Nose optioned Turbos were fitted with them. We think they are an essential element of the whole vintage 930 Turbo experience.

They are a truly unique driving experience different from the normally aspirated 911 of similar vintage. One can drive it around town just like a “regular 911″…but once the tach hits that magic 4000rpm – 4500rpm mark is when the real fun begins. These cars are an absolute hoot when driven properly. 930s are idiosyncratic in their driving characteristics – so we’d have to mention the fact they really aren’t intended for casual drivers. This is a true high performance machine that warrants 100% attention from the driver. The reward being one of the most enjoyable vintage Porsche experiences to be had at this price point.

Sporting the classic color combo of Guard’s Red over Black leather, This car is equipped with the “right stuff”: 4 speed manual transmission, limited slip differential, power sport seats, raised steering hub, sunroof, rear wiper, the original Blaupunkt stereo, books and original window sticker, and – of course – the classic 16″ Fuchs Alloy wheels with black centers. This example has covered only 25,000 miles. Low mileage 930s are extremely hard to come by. If you are looking for a nice, well-maintained 930 Coupe to drive and enjoy, here’s a great candidate.

The 3.2 Carrera replaced the 911SC in ‘84, making this ‘85 an early example. The 3.2 Carrera utilized the venerable 915 transmission through model year ‘86. 1987 was the 1st year of the G50 (950) transmission. The car presented here is a very well maintained example of the breed. The owner is a very passionate individual who really hates having to sell, but would like to see it go to another enthusiast home. The car is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As with any pre-owned Porsche purchase, a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) is highly recommended. It’s priced right and ready to go. If you’re seriously hunting for one of these gems, they’re getting tougher and tougher to find in this condition at this price point. It’s worth a closer look…

Magnus Walker is passionate and serious about early Porsches. He has just completed an extensive restoration of a ‘66 911. His goal was to build a lightweight R inspired sports purpose SWB car – the type of car that was raced by the Porsche factory in the mid 60’s (think early Vic Elford). The current weight of the car is 2065 lbs with half a tank of gas; it has been lowered to 23.5” rear -24” front, corner balanced, & aligned. The set up includes 22 & 30 mm torsion bars,19 mm front & rear adjustable sway bars,& adjustable spring plates, along with Koni adjustable shocks. The car rides on 15 x 6 fuchs with Yokohama S drive 205/55/15 tires. Although not the original 2.0 liter motor{# 907533}; Walker was almost able to find “the needle in the haystack” with engine # 907540 which according to the Porsche C.O.A is only 7 engines from the original in the car & was perhaps built the same day!! An extensive detailed build sheet of his restoration is below.

So, here we are again with another street/track setup. An ‘81 911 SC Coupe. This one is from Mohr Imports of Monterey, California. They have an asking price of $14,900. That’s chump change when it comes to getting into a street/track-prepped Porsche 911. Since we haven’t seen this car in the metal, we’re guessing it’ll require additional attention before being considered truly track ready…One can easily spend again the asking price getting this car properly setup and still be light years ahead of the game. There is absolutely no way one can build a street/track 911 from scratch for this small amount of money. That said, this car looks like a great starting point for some serious fun on the track.

Guards Red over Black.Stock mechanicals. No accident history. Chain tensioner update. No oil leaks. Paint is excellent. No rust on the car. Gaps are correct. Interior is very clean. A/C works -blows cool but not cold. Compressor is good. All guages work. Defroster, Power windows and Sunroof are in good order.

The car then changed hands from ‘05 to present. Excellent running and driving car. Engine is strong. No smoke. Great gearbox (good syncros in all gears) and clutch. The car has a very solid and tight feel. Runs great at freeway speeds or in town driving.

Stuttgart. The home of today’s Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has a very special sound in the world of motoring: Zuffenhausen. Indeed, Zuffenhausen is far more than “just” a production plant rich in tradition for Porsche AG, since it is here in Zuffenhausen that the heart of the Company beats to this very day. Zuffenhausen has been Porsche’s home address for more than 70 years and more than one million Porsche sports cars have been built here in Stuttgart since 1950.

The Porsche Design and Construction office moved from Kronenstrasse 24 in downtown Stuttgart to the new group of buildings in the District of Zuffenhausen way back in June 1938. Right from the beginning, important chapters in the history of the automobile were then written in Porsche’s home plant: This is where the first series of the car destined to become the Volkswagen Beetle was built in 1938, followed in 1939 by the Type 64 as the great-grandfather of all Porsche sports cars to come in later years. Originally planned for the Berlin-Rome long-distance race, this aerodynamic, highly streamlined sports car became the trendsetter for all Porsche models to follow.

After the first few units of the Porsche 356 had been built in the Austrian town of Gmünd as of 1948, Porsche returned to Stuttgart as a genuine “car city” in late 1949. With the Porsche Plant in Zuffenhausen still being occupied at the time by the US military, Porsche first rented a production hall on the premises of the nearby Reutter & Co. GmbH Coachbuilding and Body Construction Plant, starting to prepare production in early 1950.

With the first Type 356 being completed in Stuttgart on 6 April 1950, overall production up to the end of the year amounted to 369 units. The success of Porsche’s sports cars is borne out clearly not only by the Company’s sales figures, but also by the further expansion of the production facilities in Zuffenhausen. The buildings forming Porsche Plant 2 designed by the well-known architect Rolf Gutbrod were completed in 1952 and in 1956 the 10,000th Porsche 356 left the plant, which was consistently enlarged and upgraded over the years. Porsche Plant 3 followed in 1960, also housing the Sales and Customer Service Departments.

Immediately after the introduction of the Porsche 911, Porsche KG, as the Company was still called at the time, took over the Reutter Coachbuilding and Body Construction Company in 1964 with its workforce of approximately 1,000 employees. Today the complete 911 model series as well as models of the Boxster series and all Porsche engines are built in Zuffenhausen.

The Plant is split up into the Bodyshop, Paint shop, Vehicle Assembly, Upholstery, Engine Assembly and Test Dynamometers. To ensure flexible production in a confined area, Porsche has developed special solutions including multi-floor production in the Bodyshop and Vehicle Assembly. A further special feature is that Porsche’s series models are built together with the racing versions on one and the same assembly line. As yet a further highlight a new, particularly ecological Paint shop will be opened in 2011. Currently being built in the direct vicinity of Plants 1 and 5, the new Paint shop will be situated on the former premises of Dürr AG purchased by Porsche in spring 2008.

The new Porsche Museum was opened in January 2009 as an additional pledge to Zuffenhausen. Here, virtually on the Company’s home ground, some 80 historical cars and exhibits from the history of the Company are presented in an exhibition area of 5,600 square metres or 60,200 square feet. As the most spectacular building project commissioned by Porsche, the Porsche Museum has not only gone down in the history of the Company, but also enriches the entire Stuttgart Region as an outstanding highlight in culture and architecture.

The Porsche Museum is honouring the 60th anniversary of Porsche in Zuffenhausen with a special exhibition: The beginnings and the ongoing development of production at Zuffenhausen are being presented by a series of photos in this exhibition from 20 March to 9 May 2010. A further outstanding highlight is the first Porsche 356 Coupé built in Zuffenhausen shown for the first time in the Museum after an unusual restoration process.

The Porsche Museum is opened Tuesdays to Sundays from 9:00 to 18:00. For further information, Log on to: www.porsche.com/museum.

This video – courtesy of the Porsche UK Driving Centre via YouTube – will demonstrate the simple fact that Porsche has gone far beyond the ’70s high water mark of 911s, with the 996 & 997 series GT3 platforms. Here at PML, we have been fortunate to experience not only the original Carrera RS of ‘73, but both the 996 & 997 GT3 cars as well.

All we can briefly say is; “They’re not kidding…”

The newer generation GT3s are phenomenal cars and leave nothing to be desired. At 7:30 minutes long, this is a longish video – but that’s ok…go get a bag of popcorn and turn it up. Enjoy.

We can’t say enough good things about Paul Kramer and his uncanny ability to bring in and feature wonderful, one-of-a-kind Porsches at his neat shop, “AutoKennel”. This 1969 911S coupe is just the latest in what’s becoming a long line of great Porsches to come out of his Costa Mesa shop.

Over $125,000 has been invested building this stunning concours winner. Everything on this car was meticulously restored over a 2-year process. Either NOS parts were used or original items were restored. No expense was spared. a complete documented restoration history including over 200 photos as well as spreadsheets is available.

The car was entered at the 2009 Keystone, Colorado PCA Parade Concours d’Elegance in the early 911 Touring class and won first place with a score of 233.2 out of a possible 235.0, a total point loss of only 1.8 points and only .1 of a point was deducted for originality issues.

The owner of this car is a very reputable Porsche 356 person who knows what it takes to build a “correct” car. He truly is the kind of person you want to buy an early Porsche from. The car is located with the owner in Colorado, just outside of Denver. He encourages potential buyers to come look at the car to truly appreciate the level of craftsmanship.

Some of the restoration highlights include:

Bare metal media and sand blast entire exterior, all wheel wells, the floor pan (inside and lower), epoxy primer and professionally refinished

Recently, an enthusiast went out to Denver and inspected the car: here are his comments: “Bottom line- for anyone looking for an original, mechanically sound early S, they are well advised to spend the extra money and get a car like Tom’s that is as good as when it left the factory. Old Porsches, and early S models in particular, are notoriously expensive to restore, and many restorations are done incorrectly. You will not find a nicer example of a ‘69 S than Tom’s. And, I’m a fan of the ‘69 S– it is a single year model, first year longer wheel base, first year MFI, and last year of the original 901 2 liter motor. It is an engineering marvel. A rolling piece of art.”

The Truspeed Team has done it again. They now present to you this beautiful 1973 black over black 911S Coupe. This is one of the best documented examples the Truspeed Team has seen in a long time. The car is rare in that not only is it a gorgeous Black with a Black interior but it also has some unique options. It’s equipped with sun roof, sport seats, rear wiper, and has been restored to a very high standard. The ‘73 is considered by many to be the best year of the early “pre 74″ 911s to collect and this is certainly a great candidate.
