AMELIA ISLAND, Florida (March 10, 2011) – Calling all Steve McQueen fans! RM Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction house, will lift the gavel on the fabulous, Slate Grey 1970 Porsche 911S formerly owned by the “King of Cool” Steve McQueen. This very car was featured in his epic Hollywood film “Le Mans”. This highly-anticipated sale takes place in Monterey, California, August 18 – 20, 2011.

Built to the highest 1970 specification, complete with air conditioning and a full complement of factory options, the Slate Grey 911S stars in the film’s legendary opening sequence as McQueen’s character, hotshot Porsche driver, Michael Delaney, drives through the French countryside, reflecting on life, death, and racing.

In addition to its starring role in the film, the Porsche 911S was used as McQueen’s personal transport during the movie’s production, later joining his own stable of extraordinary motor cars in California – a collection that over the years included everything from a Jaguar XK-SS, multiple Ferraris, Porsches, airplanes, motorcycles and everything in between.

Today, the 911S is presented in exceptionally original condition, and is offered from the collection of one of America’s foremost Porsche aficionados. In advance of its auction in August, it will be displayed at this weekend’s world-renowned Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and RM Amelia Island sale, March 10 – 13 in Northeast Florida.

Editors’ Note: Here at PML we had the pleasure of viewing this car at a charity event known as “The Friends Of Steve McQueen Car Show“.  This is an annual fund raiser for the Boys Republic of Chino Hills, California (of which McQueen was an alumnus).  It’s a beautiful car, and everything they say it is.  Please note however that the passenger side windshield wiper is improperly positioned – we’re going to assume it’s just loose.  On 911s, both wipers should lay flat in front of the driver when at rest.  Prospective bidders should not worry about this – it’s a real simple, 5 minute adjustment with hand tools.  In fact, we’re surprised this got past everybody during the photo shoot!

And yes, we intend to be at this sale – watching this piece of modern cultural history go across the block…see you there!

This looks like an amazing example of an un-restored 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo. This 930 is a very rare color combination of Copper Brown Metallic with two tone Tan/Chocolate Brown leather.

This came to our attention courtesy of a collector friend of PML.  We have not seen this car in the metal, so you “now know what we know”. The current owner is a very knowledgeable (and pretty picky) Porsche Collector with an affinity for the early 930s. The owner told us he’d be more than happy to change out that over-sized Porsche badge currently on the steering wheel in favor of a smaller, properly-sized version.  He will also remove the UNGO alarm system that’s currently in the car.  Remember UNGO alarms? We remember them as being real effective – what usually happened is you’d turn the alarm on after parking the car, only to return to a real dead battery.

The 930 was produced between 1975 and 1989. It was Porsche’s flagship 911, and at the time of its introduction the fastest production car available in Germany.

The 930 proved very fast but also very demanding. The normally-aspirated 911 was already prone to oversteer because of its rear engine layout and short wheelbase. Adding the turbo engine – with it’s not insignificant turbo lag – meant driving the car required more skill to drive at the edge of its now higher level of performance. Despite the rear engine layouts’ advantage of providing superior traction, sudden bursts of power to the rear wheels in mid-corner could turn the car into an expensive weed wacker. This effect was amplified when an unexperienced driver instinctively lifts the throttle in reaction. The 930 needs to be kept at high revs during spirited driving to minimise the turbo lag. Skilled drivers quickly learn how to drive the 930 properly, and with that knowledge comes the ability to drive the car above and beyond the levels of most other sports cars.

If you’re looking for something a little more challenging than a “normal” 911, you owe it to yourself to consider a 930.  We’re pleased to present three outstanding examples of the later-production 930 from three very well-known Porsche dealers: AIC Auto of Pennsylvania, Autokennel of California, and Truspeed Motorcars of California.

In March of 1968 Porsche published a customer bulletin entitled “Information Regarding Porsche Vehicles Used for Sports Purposes” that provided details, specifications and guidelines on building a car for competitive events such as rallying and circuit racing. Several years ago John decided to build-up a SWB 911 based on the criteria found in this handbook.

One aspect of the build John took very seriously was the use of NOS Rally & Competition parts, wherever and whenever possible.  Another neat characteristic of this build was John’s “three cars in one” approach. He has set up the car to wear one of three different configurations: Track Events, Rallys, and Shows.  There is a parts list, inventory, and set-up approach for each “application”. They are a truly unique driving experience different from  the normally aspirated 911 of similar vintage. One can drive it around town just like a “regular 911″…but once the tach hits that magic 4000rpm – 4500rpm mark is when the real fun begins. These cars are an absolute hoot when driven properly. 930s are idiosyncratic in their driving characteristics – so we’d have to mention the fact they really aren’t intended for casual drivers. This is a true high performance machine that warrants 100% attention from the driver. The reward being one of the most enjoyable vintage Porsche experiences to be had at this price point.

Nothing epitomizes the “Go Fast & Live Large” ’80s quite like a Porsche 930 Turbo Coupe fitted with the factory’s Slope Nose option. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of aftermarket Slope Nose “conversions” done to Turbo and non-Turbo 911s alike. The quality of these aftermarket conversions ranged from being almost indistinguishable from the real deal to simply horrendous hack jobs. Here at PML we’ve seen a lot of these so-called conversions fall in the latter category. That said, whenever a real one comes on the market it will get our attention – every time.

Here at PML we consider the 3.2 Carrera Series 911 one of the most bulletproof cars Porsche ever built. The 3.2 Carrera replaced the 911SC in ‘84, making this ‘85 an early example.  The 3.2 Carrera utilized the venerable 915 transmission through model year ‘86. 1987 was the 1st year of the G50 (950) transmission.  The car presented here is a very well maintained example of the breed. The owner is a very passionate individual who really hates having to sell, but would like to see it go to another enthusiast home.
