The 930 was produced between 1975 and 1989. It was Porsche’s flagship 911, and at the time of its introduction the fastest production car available in Germany.

The 930 proved very fast but also very demanding. The normally-aspirated 911 was already prone to oversteer because of its rear engine layout and short wheelbase. Adding the turbo engine – with it’s not insignificant turbo lag – meant driving the car required more skill to drive at the edge of its now higher level of performance. Despite the rear engine layouts’ advantage of providing superior traction, sudden bursts of power to the rear wheels in mid-corner could turn the car into an expensive weed wacker. This effect was amplified when an unexperienced driver instinctively lifts the throttle in reaction. The 930 needs to be kept at high revs during spirited driving to minimise the turbo lag. Skilled drivers quickly learn how to drive the 930 properly, and with that knowledge comes the ability to drive the car above and beyond the levels of most other sports cars.

If you’re looking for something a little more challenging than a “normal” 911, you owe it to yourself to consider a 930. We’re pleased to present three outstanding examples of the later-production 930 from three very well-known Porsche dealers: AIC Auto of Pennsylvania, Autokennel of California, and Truspeed Motorcars of California.

Since 1978, John Witmer, has been selling new and pre-owned Porsches. John founded AIC (Automotive Investment Counseling) in 1989 and continues to help his customers in the acquisition of their dream cars. Today, AIC Auto Sales Inc. operates in a hand-hewn log building nestled in the woods of Southern Lancaster County Pennsylvania, right next to his home, where all vehicles are stored indoors in a climate controlled garage. John presents this gorgeous 1988 Turbo Cabriolet (pictured above), with 48k Miles on it. John is asking $47,500 for this incredible car, fitted with the rare sports seats.

Our friends at Truspeed Motorcars of Costa Mesa recently acquired this stunning 1986 930 Turbo Coupe. 930 Turbos will always occupy a special place in our hearts here at PML. They are a truly unique driving experience different from the normally aspirated 911 of similar vintage. One can drive it around town just like a “regular 911″…but once the tach hits that magic 4000rpm – 4500rpm mark is when the real fun begins. These cars are an absolute hoot when driven properly. 930s are idiosyncratic in their driving characteristics – so we’d have to mention the fact they really aren’t intended for casual drivers. This is a true high performance machine that warrants 100% attention from the driver. The reward being one of the most enjoyable vintage Porsche experiences to be had at this price point.

Sporting the classic color combo of Silver over Black leather, This car is equipped with the “right stuff”: 4 speed manual transmission, limited slip differential, power sport seats, raised steering hub, sunroof, rear wiper, the original Blaupunkt stereo, books and original window sticker, and – of course – the classic 16″ Fuchs Alloy wheels with black centers. This example has covered only 13,500 miles. Low mileage 930s are extremely hard to come by. If you are looking for a nice, well-maintained 930 Coupe to drive and enjoy, here’s a great candidate.

“Monterey Week” is almost upon us. What better place to be in mid-August than on the Monterey Peninsula? PML will be hitting the Monterey auction circuit in full force this year. Russo & Steele, RM, Gooding, and Bonhams all have Porsches consigned, so the action ought to be fast and furious all weekend long. At Russo & Steele, the action starts Thursday, August 12th (click here for the schedule).

We present here a few of the listings from Russo & Steele. They have a fairly broad selection ranging from 356s, to SWB and LWB “Longhood” 911s, a track-only 911, a US-spec Carrera, an unusual “delete spoiler” M491 Cabriolet, a 930 Turbo Coupe, and a 996 Twin Turbo Coupe**. Pre-auction estimates were not available at press time. (Please note: this is not a complete listing;cars are still being added to the auction line-up). For any car guy with 120 octane in their veins, this is truly a “pilgrimage to Mecca”… We hope to see you up there. Please click here for the auction location – a downloadable pdf map is available.

Scroll down the page to view the offerings – for further information on any of the cars, simply click on it’s image. (When clicking on the links; be sure to hit your browser’s “back” button to return to this page afterwards).

**PML has not inspected any of these cars, nor do we have any vested interest in their sale.

Nothing epitomizes the “Go Fast & Live Large” ’80s quite like a Porsche 930 Turbo Coupe fitted with the factory’s Slope Nose option. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of aftermarket Slope Nose “conversions” done to Turbo and non-Turbo 911s alike. The quality of these aftermarket conversions ranged from being almost indistinguishable from the real deal to simply horrendous hack jobs. Here at PML we’ve seen a lot of these so-called conversions fall in the latter category. That said, whenever a real one comes on the market it will get our attention – every time.

John Witmer of AIC Auto in Pennsylvania presents this outstanding ‘87 930 Turbo. Finished in the classic Silver over Black leather combination, this example is well maintained and well preserved with only 44k miles on the odometer. It is nicely equipped with full leather Sports Seats, the original Blaupunkt Reno radio, Rear wiper, Ltd slip, 16″ Fuchs Alloys, and a sunroof. A big plus are the sport seats; not all of the Slope Nose optioned Turbos were fitted with them. We think they are an essential element of the whole vintage 930 Turbo experience.

Our friends at Truspeed Motorcars of Costa Mesa recently acquired this stunning 1988 930 Turbo Coupe.

Sporting the classic color combo of Guard’s Red over Black leather, This car is equipped with the “right stuff”: 4 speed manual transmission, limited slip differential, power sport seats, raised steering hub, sunroof, rear wiper, the original Blaupunkt stereo, books and original window sticker, and – of course – the classic 16″ Fuchs Alloy wheels with black centers. This example has covered only 25,000 miles. Low mileage 930s are extremely hard to come by. If you are looking for a nice, well-maintained 930 Coupe to drive and enjoy, here’s a great candidate.

Here at PML we consider the 3.2 Carrera Series 911 one of the most bulletproof cars Porsche ever built. The 3.2 Carrera replaced the 911SC in ‘84, making this ‘85 an early example. The 3.2 Carrera utilized the venerable 915 transmission through model year ‘86. 1987 was the 1st year of the G50 (950) transmission. The car presented here is a very well maintained example of the breed. The owner is a very passionate individual who really hates having to sell, but would like to see it go to another enthusiast home. The car is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As with any pre-owned Porsche purchase, a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) is highly recommended. It’s priced right and ready to go. If you’re seriously hunting for one of these gems, they’re getting tougher and tougher to find in this condition at this price point. It’s worth a closer look…

3.2 Carrera / E, F, G, H, I, J and K series (1983–1989)
With the 911’s future ensured by Peter Schutz’s fateful decision , 1983 saw the launch of a replacement for the successful SC series. It was the MY 1984 911 3.2 Carrera, reviving the Carrera name for the first time since 1975. The 911 3.2 Carrera was the last iteration in the original 911 series, with all subsequent models featuring new body styling with new brake, electronic and suspension technologies.

A new higher displacement motor, a 3.2 liter horizontally opposed flat 6 cylinder, was utilized. The new swept volume of 3164 cc was achieved using the 95 mm (3.7 in) bore (from the previous SC model) combined with the 1978 Turbo 3.3 crankshaft’s 74.4 mm (2.9 in) stroke. In addition, higher domed pistons increased the compression ratio from 9.8 to 10.3:1 (although only 9.5:1 for the US market). New inlet manifold and exhaust systems were fitted. The 915 transmission was carried over from the SC series for the first three model years. In 1987, the Carrera got a new five-speed gearbox sourced from Getrag, model number G50 with proven Borg-Warner synchronizers. This slightly heavier version also featured a hydraulically-operated clutch.

With the new engine, power was increased to 207 bhp (154 kW; 210 PS) at 5900 rpm for North American-delivered cars and to 231 bhp (172 kW; 234 PS) at 5900 rpm for most other markets. This version of the 911 accelerated 0– 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.4 seconds and had a top speed of 150 mph (240 km/h) as measured by the magazine AUTOCAR. Factory times were more modest: 0-60 mph time of 6.3 seconds for the US version and 6.1 seconds for cars outside the American market.

The disc brakes were increased in size to aid in more effective heat dissipation and improved oil-fed chain tensioners were fitted to the engine. To improve oil cooling, a finned cooler replaced the serpentine lines in the front passenger fender well. This was further improved in 1987, with the addition of a thermostatically-controlled fan.

Driving refinement and motor reliability were improved with an upgrade of the fuel and ignition control components to a L-Jetronic with Bosch Motronics 2 DME (Digital Motor Electronics system). An improvement in fuel-efficiency was due to the DME providing a petrol cut-off on the overrun. Changes in the fuel map & chip programming from October 1986, further improved the power to 217 bhp (162 kW; 220 PS) at 5900 rpm for North American delivered cars as well as for other markets requesting low emissions, like Germany. Custom-mapped chips remain a popular upgrade. The fuel relay that is mounted externally on the DME is known to be a weak point of the system.

Three basic models were available throughout the Carrera years – Coupe, Targa and Cabriolet. When launched in 1984 in the United States, the prices of the 911 Carrera lineup were $31,950 for the Coupe, $33,450 for the Targa and $36,450 for the Cabriolet. Almost indistinguishable from the SC, external clues are the front fog lights, which were integrated into the front valance in the Carrera. Very modest cosmetic changes were made throughout the lifespan of the Carrera, with a redesigned dash featuring larger air conditioning vents appearing in 1986.

Two special editions of the Carrera were produced – the “Commemorative Edition” in 1988 to commemorate 250,000 911s produced and an “Anniversary” edition in 1989 which was the model’s 25th year of production. Both were cosmetic packages with limited production.

In 1984, Porsche also introduced the M491 option. Officially called the Supersport, it was commonly known as the “Turbo-look”. It was a style that resembled the Porsche 930 Turbo with wide wheel arches and the distinctive “tea tray” tail. It featured the stiffer turbo suspension and the superior turbo braking system as well as the wider turbo wheels. Sales of the Supersport were particularly strong for its first two years in the United States because the desirable 930 was not available.

The 911 Speedster (option M503), a low-roof version of the Cabriolet which was evocative of the Porsche 356 Speedster of the 1950s, was produced in limited numbers (2.104) starting in January 1989 until July 1989 as both a narrow body car and a Turbo-look. The narrow version was produced only 171 times, that means for the lucky owners an exclusive car from the very beginning. It started as a design under Helmuth Bott in 1983 but was not manufactured until six years later. It was a two-seat convertible that featured a low swept windshield.[9]

The 1987 Carrera Club Sport, of which 340 were produced, is a collectible 911 that had a blueprinted engine with a higher rev limit, and had the electric windows, electric seats, and radio removed to save a claimed 50 kg (110 lb) in weight.

Total production of the 911 3.2 Carrera series was 76,473 cars (35,670 Coupé, 19,987 Cabrio, 18,468 Targa).[10]

In late 1989, the 911 underwent a major evolution, with the introduction of the Type Porsche 964 (1989–1993).
