Paul Lighthill, PML’s Technical Editor, in his 1970 911 S at a Palm Springs Vintage race. Paul purchased this gorgeous car in 1985 from the second owner. The first owner took delivery of the car in late 1969 in Madrid, Spain. Paul still has the original maintenance booklet and stamp from the delivering dealer in Madrid. The car toured Europe, then ended up in storage for two years due to an over-rev to the engine. Tear-down revealed two bent valves and a cracked crankshaft, so a complete overhaul was performed. Paul and his wife, Anja, then embarked on a program of preparing the car for POC time trials and vintage racing. (See Paul’s article on race preparation.) Paul related a great story about the car. He and Anja were driving in downtown Palm Springs when the original owner, a man now in his seventies, pulled up alongside of them in his new C2 and yelled out, "I used to own that car!" Paul says the look of happiness on the gentleman’s face, seeing that his car had found a good home, made all of their hard work on it seem worthwhile. |
